Roundup: Cadel Evans’ yellow jersey dream ends due to injury: Australia’s media
CANBERRA, July 14 (Xinhua) — The Tour de France dreams of Australian Cadel Evans came to a crushing end on his first day in the leader’s yellow jersey, Australia’s media reported on Wednesday.
“Cadel bravely tried to defy the odds by racing with a fractured elbow that had been kept secret but lost more than eight minutes on the 204.5km ninth stage from Morzine to Saint Jean de Maurienne, and all chance of winning overall,” Sydney Morning Herald reported on Wednesday.
Evans finished the last of two days in the Alps in 42nd place at 8 minutes 9 seconds to the stage winner, Frenchman Sandy Casar, who beat Spaniard Luis-Leon Sanchez and Italian Damiano Cunego across the line.
Evans’ performance was affected by the pain of racing with a fractured elbow.
His distress was clear at the finish. Immediately after stopping, he fell into the arms of Italian teammate Mauro Santambrogio who rode by his side for more than 30km to the end.
As they hugged, Evans dropped his head into Santambrogio’s chest and cried, Herald reported.
Incredibly, only a handful of BMC staff knew of Evans’ injury, a fractured elbow sustained in his crash seven kilometers into Sunday’s 189km eighth stage from Station des Rousses to Morzine Avoriaz.
The injury was only confirmed on Monday’s rest day after he felt pain in a morning training ride and later had x-rays at a Morzine clinic.
The Herald reported that Evans did not even tell the media of his injury when he faced them at the BMC team bus after Tuesday’s stage. That was left to team management later.
“I wasn’t at the same as I was at Avoriaz. I had a big crash first six or seven kilometers at the start of the stage and I am really paying for the consequences in the last 48 hours before,” Evans said.
“I suffer on my bike every day. I do it for pleasure
