Voters to decide on transfer taxes
Realtors in St. Joseph are supporting a proposed ballot measure to block real estate transfer taxes.
A Cole County circuit judge ruled last week that supporters of the measure submitted enough signatures to qualify for the Nov. 2 statewide ballot. That overturns the secretary of state’s decision that too few valid signatures were submitted.
The ballot measure would prohibit transfer taxes imposed on real estate sales. Missouri does not currently levy that type of tax, but supporters of the ballot measure fear that Jefferson City lawmakers will try to impose a transfer tax in an effort to shore up the state’s massive budget shortfall.
“We feel like it would be unfair to property owners,” said Mary Kay Lyle, board president of the St. Joseph Regional Association of Realtors
